Penrose Press began publishing the international directory of design in 1989. It began as photocopied A4 pages that were circulated among the high technology arts community. These pages identified high technology art educational programs throughout the world and were distributed to faculty in order to foster exchange programs.

Within the first year of publication, the directory was greatly expanded by information provided by UNESCO. Subsequently, the Ministries of Education of all of the member nations of the UN helped us to expand and complete the directory of educational programs. Over the years, the directory has grown to include journals and professional organizations, and most recenly, conferences and events.

From the outset, the directory was distributed on the Internet as well as in print form. Initially, prior to the development of the World Wide Web, it was distributed through e-mail. In 1993, the first HTML (text only) version of the directory was posted on the Internet. Over the years, we added new content, color, graphics, and interactive links.

Between 1991 and 2003, the directory was published in print. By 2001, it had grown to 12 volumes with over 2,000 pages. Soon, it was no longer economically feasible to publish the directory in print. After careful consideration, the Press decided to convert the directory to a web-only publication. The directory's website remained dormant for about two years, until a new version that could fulfill the new requirements of a web-only publication could be developed. It was released in January of 2005. This substantially improved website includes advertising and news.

In 2006, Penrose Press expanded its news service to include a subscription based focus - INTERNATIONAL NEWS RECORD. This news service delivers specialized design news focused on customer's unique subject domain. We hope you continue to use the directory for all your Design information needs, and we invite you to subscribe to our news service.
